Petrified Forest National Park

Roughly twenty-five miles from the lonesome town of Holbrook, AZ, lies a wonderland of imagination and history - Petrified Forest National Park. While there aren’t many who consider the desert a beautiful place, and find its environment hostile and foreboding- this park presents a map of history yet undiscovered anywhere else on Earth. From 13,000 years of human history preserved in artifacts, trails, and stories- to 220 million years of time embedded within a tree; this park has more to offer than any one person could ever take in. The talented paleontology staff at this park have uncovered some of the oldest type specimens of all forms of life, and have been working hard to effectively bridge a quarter-billion years of time in their collections.

I was lucky enough to spend a week and a half in the park surveying for birds with my field crew, and as a result got to see some off-trail landscapes and marvels that would make anybody’s day.
